Bible Verses to Help with Anxiety
Are you dealing with anxious thoughts today? I get it. I’ve been there many times myself.
Sometimes, when we are in the middle of our storm, it is hard to think clearly and find the resources we need to pull us out of our heads. I find meditating on the truth in scripture helps calm my anxious mind and fill my heart with peace. Here are a collection of Bible verses to help us on our anxious days. There is power in God’s word! We can trust His love and grace to hold us and help us through.
You may like to write these verses out in your journal, thinking about the meaning of the words as you form the letters.
When I meditate on scripture, I ask myself three simple questions:
What does this scripture say about God and His character?
What does this scripture mean for me in my current season?
What do I need to do? Is there something I need to change?
I pray that you will find hope and peace as you meditate on these truths from God’s word.
Scripture Meditations for Anxious Thoughts
Turn your worries into prayers
God invites us to pray about every situation, big and small. I also love the reminder to be thankful in this passage.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. —Philippians 4:6
Come to Me
Where do you turn to when you are feeling anxious? Do you eat comfort food, binge Netflix or turn to exercise to feel better? Jesus invites us to come to Him to find rest for our souls.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28
Receive Peace
Jesus came to give us peace. Jesus’ peace does not depend on our circumstances or everything being okay in the world. Jesus' peace is an inner peace we experience when the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts and mind.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
—John 14:27
Trust in God
Isaiah the prophet encouraged the Israelites with messages from God during a difficult time in their history. He encouraged the people to trust God and obey Him rather than follow the culture around them. While the prophets can be difficult to read, the messages are rich with glimpses of God’s character.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will sour on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
—Isaiah 40:31
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
—Isaiah 41:10
Be Courageous
When Moses died, and Joshua took over the leadership of the Israelites, God gave him some instructions. God told Joshua to be courageous and promised that He would always be with him. I find God's words to Joshua very encouraging when I am afraid or feeling out of my depth.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. —Joshua 1:9
Don’t Worry
Jesus knew we would have problems with worry. He talked about worry in the famous Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus said not to worry about what we eat or wear. For some reason, I think about these two things a lot. How did Jesus know?
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. —Luke 12:22–23
Jesus tells us not to worry about tomorrow. Focusing on the present and not letting my thoughts run away into the what-if’s of the future is helpful, knowing God is already taking care of my tomorrow.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. —Matthew 6:25-34
God Loves You
Ever felt unlovable? Ever felt unforgivable? Ever felt like God is far away? This scripture promises us—nothing you have ever done or not done will ever separate you from God's love.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:38-3
Trust God
Not sure what to do next? Need direction? I memorised this verse, and I recite it to myself in the car when I know I've got a big day or when I have problems to solve, and I don't know what to do.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. —Proverbs 3:5-6
Faith over Fear
Sometimes you need a simple statement to turn our fear into faith. This verse works for me!
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. —Psalm 56:3
