No Updates Required: The Unchanging Hope of Easter
Today, I’m writing on my iPad. It’s lighter and more portable than my laptop. I have a good keyboard that attaches, which makes it convenient for writing on the go. Today, however, I am being frequently interrupted by the little notification window reminding me that there are updates available for my device.
It’s very annoying.
It’s not that I don’t like updates. I appreciate the new features and the increased security. Updates are a good idea.
We like to live in houses with updated kitchens and updated bathrooms. As the season changes, I will be on the lookout for ways to update my wardrobe with a few new seasonal pieces. We often look forward to updating our car, television or couch. Updates are a good thing. And most things don’t last forever. They need to be updated in time.
But do you ever get tired of the constant need for updates?
Years ago, I was working in Creative Ministries in our church, and as Easter approached each year, we put a lot of work into crafting a way of presenting the Easter story in a new and impactful way. It was always a challenge because the story stays the same. Year after year, generation after generation, the Easter story doesn’t change.
I am no longer involved in the Creative team. But this year, as I prepare my heart for the approaching Easter season, I am not longing for a new and exciting presentation of the Easter narrative. No. The thing I’m looking forward to is that there is no update required.
The story is the same.
We will read the same Bible passages.
We will sing familiar songs.
We will remember the same Jesus: His death, His resurrection, the penalty He paid, the death He defeated, the life He offers. No updates required.
Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. From generation to generation, to generation.
And there is such comfort and stability in that. Our world changes so rapidly. There is so much uncertainty in every day. However, we have Jesus, an anchor for our souls, a foundation that doesn’t shift.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. —Hebrews 6:19
It’s easy for us to become fearful and overwhelmed. When we focus on the whirlwind around us, it’s so easy to lose our sense of direction, to become overwhelmed and disoriented.
But we don’t need to be overwhelmed. We don’t need to be overcome with fear. We can take courage and be at peace in an uncertain world. Because our hope is in Christ, and He does not change. Our hope is secure.
This Easter, I’m looking forward to the familiar more than ever. I’m looking forward to hearing the familiar Bible passages and singing familiar songs. I’m looking forward to my heart meditating on the unchanging truth that my Saviour died for me, and rose again so that I can have a personal relationship with God.
I pray that this Easter may be a grounding and stabilising time in your life too. I pray you find peace and comfort in the anchor that is our hope in Christ.
