Are you struggling with negative thoughts, fear, or worry? The Bible offers powerful truth to help us overcome destructive thinking patterns. These Bible verses about changing your mindset will encourage you to renew your mind, find peace, and trust God in every circumstance.

My mind isn’t always very helpful. It fills with thoughts of worry, fear and regret, keeping me awake at night and stealing my joy. What I think about is vitally important. My thoughts drive my attitude, my mood and my behaviour. The thoughts swirling in my head determine the way I live.

But how can we change our mindset? How can we control our thoughts? How do we, as the Bible says, renew our minds?

One of the most effective ways I have found to overcome negative thoughts is with scripture. There are many Bible verses about fear and worry that can change our thought life. We can experience a mindset change, we can renew our minds, when we study what the Bible says about our thinking.

I can renew my mind when I meditate on scriptures that build my faith and remind me of God’s faithfulness and power to overcome my circumstances and fear. I have taken the time to memorise many of these scriptures. I can easily recall them during my day when thoughts of worry and fear threaten to overtake my thinking.

Here are my 10 favourite Bible verses about changing your mindset:

Be transformed by renewing your mind

1.     Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2

I love the reminder in this verse that my whole life is transformed when I work on renewing my mind. God’s way of thinking is different to the pattern of the world.

Search my heart

2.     Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Psalm 139:23

This verse is a beautiful personal prayer to God to search my heart and mind for thoughts that don’t trust and honour Him.

The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace

3.     The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

When I read this verse I picture who is on the throne of my mind, the king, governing. Is it my frail self? Or is it Almighty God? Because the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Peace for those who trust in God

4.     You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Isaiah 26:3

This is another verse that reminds me to trust God fully, knowing that in God’s power I can have peace, regardless of my circumstances.

Cast my anxiety on God

5.     Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

I love the imagery of this verse. I imagine myself casting all my anxiety on God, like kicking a ball or casting a fishing net, throwing with all my might. Because, He cares for me.

Do not judge, forgive others

6.     Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37

This is a challenge, but it is oh so important. Do not judge. Do not condemn. Forgive. Our attitudes towards the people who hurt us can be a toxic poison to our souls. Giving God our hurt and letting it go is one of the most difficult and most freeing things we can learn to do.

Turn worries into prayers

7.     Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. Philippians 4:6

Philippians 4 is probably my favourite chapter in the entire Bible! It reminds me to turn my worries into prayers, and to be grateful.

Think about good things

8.     Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8

This is a beautiful list to guide our thought life. In the quiet moments, what do you think about? Worry and fear? Or things that are true, noble, right, pure and lovely? These are the things we should ponder and meditate on.

Trust God

9.     Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5–6

This verse reminds me to get out of the driver’s seat of my life and trust God. He knows all things, and He knows how all the pieces fit together. Rather than relying on myself and living independently, I can look to God, submit to Him, and follow His path.

God is with you

10.  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

I have memorised this verse and I recite it to myself when I need courage to do hard things. God knows my predisposition to fear and discouragement. He knows my reluctance to put myself out there. He understands, and He gifts me with His constant presence.

When we meditate on the truth of these verses—when we “take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:5)—we can have victory over our mindset and overcome the influence of negative thoughts in our lives. We can transform our lives when we renew our minds with God’s truth.
